Katarina started skating at the age of five old. It was her chance to demonstrate her talent and gain entry into the Karl-Marx-Stadt Special School for gifted kids. The coach Jutta was also there. Witt was able to make her mark in the year 1982 when she placed second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. After that, she began winning the competition with elegance and grace. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. In a more competitive competition, afterward, she was awarded her gold medal. Free skates were not a success, however the gold medal was awarded to her because of the performance she put during both compulsory figures (short program) and mandatory figures. Witt was the only female since Sonja Haenie to win an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her accomplishments as a movie actor. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Though she did not get a medal, she delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. Witt's admission into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame occurred in the year 1995.
